50 in 365....the update
(from, apparently, a very prolific blogger, tonight at least)
Read so far this year:
Yup, thats seven in all, and I'm pretty proud to have gotten this far so early into the year. I am actually re-reading Uglies as a part of a mentoring group that I'm co-leading. It consists of teenage girls, and I'm hoping they really can get deep with this book. Both the Pretties and the Uglies are part of a 4 book series that takes on dystopia, teenage style. They're easy reads but do make you think. The Fourth Bear is the second in the Jack Spratt/Nursery Crime series by Jasper Fforde. I first came across him when I read The Eyre Affair and fell in love with his witty imagination, and sarcasm. He is like an amusing Gregory Maguire. He manages to re-tell literature, in a poppy, witty, inventive way. It's always an adventure in 'identify the reference' when you read Fforde. The Wyrd Sisters is the next in the Discworld series by Terry Pratchett. I'm enjoying the satire, and loving the not so veiled references to modern life. I owould like to try and make it through the whole series this year. Five Quarters of the Orange was a tough read. I loved the movie 'Chocolat' and it is based on the book by the same author. I was looking forward to reading this story, and getting a feel for her style. I found this book very hard. Although the book made me hungry on occasion, I mostly felt sad for the characters, and that it took a lifetime for the narrator to come to a sense of peace within herself. I think the heavy feeling was compounded by the fact that I was reading 1984 at the same time, and it made everything dark. You can read what I thought of 1984 here, here, and here.
I've also have some books that I've been reading that I still am. The currently reading list is almost as long as the ones finished.
Anyway, here is the current list (this means I'm partway into all of these):
So to prepare for this road trip I also have a few books on CD to keep me going. So by the end of Feb I should have them read too. Here they are:
So I think this will be a good trip.
I'll have laughter, satire, sad commentary on life, all the things a girl needs to keep awake for 12 hrs.
One quick question...for the purpose of 50 in 365...do graphic novels count?
Comments
Hey thanks for sharing. I'm always looking for a new read and have been stuck in an Agatha Christie mode-- not that that is bad. I still have that one other book you recommended to me on my blog not too long ago that I need to get a hold of soon.
Anyway, I've not read any of these, so that's cool. You might check The Queen's Fool and The Other Boleyn Girl both by Phillipa Gregory. Her books are rather addicting. I also liked the movie Chocolat. I would like to buy it sometime. I may read that book you mentioned by the same author.
